What happy little blocks these are. The embroidery floss colors were delightful. I keep all my works in progress in empty pizza boxes. {clean and unused of course}

Remember the tune Do You Know the Way to San Jose?

I think I hummed and sung my way to this tune while making my Orca Bay Mystery Quilt. Not really it just came to me because I needed a blog title and it rhymed. I was only 7 years old when this song came out, but its such a classic. I love it. I remember singing it as a kid. I like singing in now as a matter of fact.

My quilt top is done. It's a biggie. It's got some mistakes. Some string blocks going the wrong way. But that's okay.

This quilt has approximately 3,844 pieces. It is 74 1/2" x 84 1/2."

I started it around December 1st ish and finished it the night before my bee meeting on January 4th.

I just blew through my stash with this one. I hardly have any neutrals left. And reds ~ well they are pretty much gone too. After this Orca Bay Quilt and another quilt that will be in the GO! Ahead and Show Some Love Blog Hop there's not much red left.

This mystery pattern won't be on Quiltville forever, so if you want it, get it now before Bonnie takes it down. Someday it's gonna be in a book. I bet!

It's been raining along the eastern seaboard for three days now. There's nothing like a nice cup of hot tea to take away the afternoon chill.

I started collecting teacups, teacup fabric, embroidery, aprons, vintage postcards and greeting cards. I found this neat selection on-line visiting some of my favorite websites.

Tuesday Treasure

Another week and I have another special treasure to share with ya'll. I am linking up today with our lovely host Melody for Tuesday's Treasure. Why not join us and share your Treasure?

This is my super duper heavy cathedral window quilt that my mom made for me when I was a senior in high school (some 33 years ago). She was not a quilter. This was her first and only quilt that she every made. I can't even imagine tackling such a big and complicated quilt for my first project.

I remembering going to the closest JC Penny in our city (See, I am a "valley girl"! I grew up in a suburb in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. I can totally remember that "Valley Girl" song) Anyone else remember it?

Upstairs we would march. On the second floor was the fabric, crafts, lingerie and the Girl & Boy Scout Sections. My brothers and I would hide among the racks of clothes. Causing the sales ladies much angst I would suspect. She would buy pieces of fabric for .10 to .25 cents each. I remember that flat fold table like it was yesterday. She would dig and dig until she found a great variety of fabrics. The store had wooden floors. I loved the sound of my shoes on that floor.

One year I took a small piece that I found and had it framed and gave it to her as a gift. It's been in my attic here in North Carolina for 18 years. The glass broke on the frame and it is a bit dusty but it gets sweeter each time I look at it.

Here is a bit of info that I gleaned from the web on these special quilts:

Cathedral Window is a traditional patchwork technique interpreted in old quilts as rows of folded squares of off-white or cream-colored muslin with assorted fabric squares in the windows. It requires about four times its area in the folded squares, so a large amount of fabric is needed for the base of the quilt. Because of the four folds involved in each of the blocks, the resulting quilt also tends to be heavy and therefore does not require batting (or backing) or any quilting. Due to its delicate construction, it is often used more as a bedspread than as a quilt itself.

A cathedral window quilt is not the same as a traditional quilt. Window panes are traditionally made from muslin or cheesecloth to create the translucent and light look generated from the windows. The window frames are often made from heavier cottons or calicos. In the old days colors were used infrequently, however we now have an abundance of materials that can be used with translucence qualities, such as silks, organza (although I wouldn't use it), light cottons and many more

Here's more:

This a great if you are part of a sewing circle or a quilter's group and are constantly on the move with your quilt. You can iron all the pieces before hand and sit very comfortably for a couple of hours while you sew each piece together. This is a lot easier than trying to carry around a full queen-sized quilt and sew the whole thing together.

It seems like it's actually quite a portable project. Maybe I'll try a small one. Along with my once-in-a-lifetime Grandmother's Flower garden quilt that I am working on.

A New Neighborhood

Have you ever seen such a crafty neighborhood? Everyone here in this neighborhood either sews or quilts.

This week I decided to put little quilting or sewing gadgets in my windows. I have made 23 houses so far. I prefer to make 7 or 8 of them per day. Sundays are best. Cold winter days when I just don't want to go outside. I am caught up and have a few days to spare.

Tuesday Treasure

I have decided to share with ya'll treasures that make me happy. Every Tuesday I'll post something that I may have here at home, something I may find when I out and about in my search for vintage sheets or maybe one of the quilting projects that a member of my bee has made that just has me in awe. That happens a lot. I really don't know what I'll post. Stay tuned and check back on Tuesdays.

Melody over at The House on the Side of the Hill has inspired me.

For this week it is my heart pocket charm. I bought 3 of them 11 years ago when my mom was very sick. I gave one to each of my daughters and one for myself. Just as a reminder that when you slip your hand into your pocket and feel the heart, you'll have nice thoughts, know that you are thought of and have a nice remembrance of something in your life that makes you smile. I kept mine in my pocket or purse. It got lost a few times. Put into my jewelry box, put back into my pocket again, found on the bottom of the washing machine. Put away again. In and out many times. Fast forward about 6 years. I found it!! In my coat pocket yesterday. On a dreary gray day, it was a nice feeling.

I finished my first UFO yesterday. My Mini Double House Glass quilt. Yesterday was one of those stay inside, sew and quilt days until you can't sit or see straight anymore.

One UFO bites the dust. 23 more to go!

New Year's Dessert Guaranteed to Please

This recipe was given to me by one of my quilting friends. It has become a favorite around here for every occasion.

I make it every year when we go to our friend's New Year's Day Open House.

Chocolate Cloud

1 Box Chocolate Brownie Mix

1 Box Chocolate Mousse Dessert

2 containers of Cool Whip (thawed)

2 -3 Heath Bars (crushed up)

Make brownies according to instructions on box. Cool completely and into squares. Make chocolate mousse according to instructions on box.

In a tall trifle-style glass bowl, make a layer of brownies on the bottom, then layer with about 1/3 of the chocolate mousse, sprinkle on some of the crushed Heath Bars. Layer about 1/3 of the cool whip. Again sprinkle with some crushed Heath Bars. Repeat layers until the bowl is full up to the top. Top with the remaining Heath Bar crumbles.

You should get the first spoonful because it is guaranteed not to last long.

Building Houses from Scraps

I am getting ready to start building houses.

I am joining in on Jeaneke's Building Houses From Scraps" challenge. The goal is to make 365 3-inch little houses, one a day. Kind of like me taking just one piece of chocolate. I just can't stop at one. Really, I can't.

You can also join in on the fun. It's free.

There are no rules or obligations. Just a fun little way to use up tiny scraps. It officially starts on January 1, 2012.

Here are a few of my blocks

You will get four houses per each page. I decided to to a trial run to see what my finished blocks would look like. I am going to make them a bit more scrappy and not use the same fabrics for each house. I think I'll try to do a page a day.

Getting ready was easy. A wonderful quilter in an on-line group that I am in sent me a big bag of scraps last year. I had no idea what I was going to do with them. After seeing this challenge, it was like playing a game of BINGO! I instantly won. I knew exactly how I was going to spend my earnings. I am going to use all the scraps jammed into this plastic tote to make this sweet house quilt. Except for maybe a few fussy cut squares for my windows.

I am going to paper piece mine. Jantine from the blog Urban Style is going to paper piece her houses too. She's made in EQ7 a PP version of the little house block pattern. She is sharing it for free, isn't that nice of her? So if you want to paper piece your house blocks too, send an email to Jantine to ask her for the PDF of the PP-Building Houses from Scraps-block. It may take a day or two, but she will get back you.

2012 is going to be my year of challenges. I've joined the Stashbuster UFO challenge, Just Takes 2, challenge myself to make a few quilts from several quilting calendars that I have collected over the years, continue to make my baby quilts for babies who are born while their daddies are deployed, and last but by least, TRY TO KEEP MY SEWING ROOM ORGANIZED.

Festival of Lights

Hanukkah, also called the Festival of Lights, starts tonight. It lasts seven days and eight nights.

It is beautiful tradition to gather with friends and family. Each bringing their own menorah and lighting their candles all at the same time.

Gather around the table, we'll give you a treat. Shiny tops to play with and pancakes to eat.

Sewing My Way to Orca Bay

Wow, I need some quilting therapy.

Orca Bay is just the right prescription for me.

See, oldest daughter and husband moved to England last week courtesy of the United States Air Force for four years. I am happy for them but sad at the same time. See, I am also gonna be a grandma in April, and, well distance and I don't get along. I learned how to Skype yesterday. I check my weather app for their new location oh maybe 6 times a day. Wow, its wet and cold across the pond.

I know for a lot of us quilting is like therapy. It helps us put our thoughts, ideas, and feelings together, sometimes gets our heads on straight and well cures a lot.

I didn't get a chance to start "Clue #1 on Day One" with everyone for the official start of Bonnie Hunter's Orca Bay mystery. But let me tell you, I got my machine rolling now.

I also wanted to share with you a new fresh twist for a cranberry salad recipe. It's so light and refreshing. I found it at Weight Watchers.

Fresh Pear-Cranberry Chutney

Weight Watchers Recipe

Course: sauces

Servings: 6

Preparation Time: 10 min

Ingredients:

2 large pear(s), firm, ripe, Anjou or Bosc, unpeeled, cored, diced

1/4 cup(s) cilantro, fresh, chopped

3 Tbsp dried cranberries, chopped

2 Tbsp red onion(s), chopped

1 Tbsp canned jalapeno peppers, or fresh, seeded, finely chopped

1 Tbsp fresh lime juice

1/2 tsp table salt, or to taste

Instructions

Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl; toss to mix and coat.
Let stand 10 minutes for flavors to blend. Serve, or cover and refrigerate up to 1 day. Yields about 1/2 cup per serving.

Double or Quadruple if needed.

A Little About Green Tomatillos

Usually I make standard salsa with red tomatoes but this week I thought I'd try something a bit different. Use the tomatillos that were in my produce box.

Tomatillos are small fruits (used as a vegetable) enclosed in a husk. The fruit resembles a small unripe tomato and is usually green or yellow. The yellow color indicates ripeness, but they can be used when they are still green. Green tomatillos are firmer and easier the slice. The husk that holds the fruit is like paper and is light brown. The flesh is slightly acidic with a hint of lemon. Tomatillos belong to the same family as tomatoes.

Salsa Verde

Ingredients:

15 -20 tomatillos, husks removed, quartered

5 cloves of garlic

1 medium white or yellow onion, skin removed, coarsely chopped

1 bunch of cilantro

1 tsp salt

1 tsp olive oil

2 jalapeno, seeds removed

1 Tbsp lime juice

Preparation:

Add onions, jalapeno peppers and tomatillos into a food processor and pulse 4 -5 times. Add remaining ingredients and purse again until desired consistency. ( I link mine very coarse).

Salsa Verde can be served immediately, but is better when it sits in the refrigerator overnight to let the flavors meld.

rural - suburbia ~ That's where I live ~

For anyone that grew up in rural North Carolina one of the greatest things about mid-summer to early fall has to be the wild blackberries. The Triangle and NC suburbs are not quite in the mountains, and not quite off of them either so they are the prime growing area for blackberry bushes. You can find them just about anywhere from the local park to the side of the road or even the parking lot at your local grocery

store.

I’ve been watching a patch just along the road as you leave my subdivision. Watching & waiting patiently as the berries went from green to red and now finally to black.

Last week early in the morning before the heat, I headed out to pick a batch. I was really worried that I’d fall into the ditch, scratch up my legs by the thorns or even yet see a snake and FREAK. My neighbors probably saw me and thought I was crazy. I could have just gone to the grocery store and paid top dollar for a pint, gone to the farmer’s market and picked up a nice assortment. Naw! That would have been too easy.

Many of us are. In 2009, FabShop conducted a survey of American quilters, which revealed some interesting data about their shopping preferences.

Just some facts to ponder:

I am still hooked on making Allison's Double-Hour Glass Blocks over at

Cluck. Cluck. SEW

In the freezing cold month of January, I took a challenge to make 50 quilts for this year in an on-line quilting group that I belong to. They didn't have to be big gigantic, enormous quilts. There were no rules. Just make 'em and bust some serious stuff in my stash. To date I have only made about 19 . OMGosh I better hurry.

I also made a commitment to myself (in November 0f 2009) to make most of my quilts to be delivered to babies who are born right here while their daddies are deployed. This has been the most gratifying project for me to date. Other than sending quilts to Alycia for her QOV project.

I am fortunate that I have a wonderful new son-in-law and daughter who call the US Air Force their employer. And with that comes an automatic "in" for a bunch of my quilts. These young, new wonderful families are all having babies. To me, I can never thank them enough for all that they do for our safety and freedom.

With all that said, Hilary this is for you!!!

I am also impatiently waiting for Pleasant Home's Square it Up Ruler to show up in her Etsy Store. It will make it so much easier to make this block without using a cardstock template.

Memorial Day

Last year in honor of Memorial Day I posted this.

This year daughter and I went downtown to our small National Cemetery and then on to the N.C. State Capital Grounds to watch the Wreath Laying at the Veteran's Monument.

Yes, it brings tears. Tears of sadness and tears of gratitude for all those who have lost a loved one. Tears seeing the fresh new Jr. ROTC recruits and the Marine Corps Color Guard march in perfect step showing such respect to a country that they love dearly.

I don't know these fine gentlemen, but they paid the ultimate sacrifice in order for us to "Live in the land of the Free"

36 minute Kitchen Towel Apron Tutorial

I am an apron wearer. All day long. Doesn't matter what I am doing. Sewing, cooking, cleaning, watching a little telly at night after the kitchen is closed. I've got one on all day. I have even been known to go out to the grocery store only to find out that I forgot to take my apron off.

I am always looking for unique items to make them out off. I can't stay away from the vintage ones that I find in antique shops. Old linens and tableclothes are my favorite. I've even made one out of some cafe curtains that I found on clearance at K-mart.

If you have 36 minutes, you can make one too! I timed myself and that is all the time it took. Make one, You'll like it.

I got this neat towel at Pier One with the orange bird and ruffle along the bottom. Already embellished and ready to go.

The best part is that I use the finished seams that are already on the towel. Which in turn means less time spent embellishing and more bling for your buck. Find one with ruffles, rosettes, embroidery, you know, whatever you want on it.

All you need is a towel and three strips of fabric cut 2 inches wide and 42 to 44 inches long (width of fabric)

I love using a bias tape maker to make my straps.

I use my yummy spray starch recipe that I created. You can find that here.

Fold your strips in half and press.

Spritz and spray and press

I like to use my Bernina No. 10 Edgestitch foot moving my needle position so so very close to the folded edges and stitch all the way down. Do the same for the other side.

You can do a google search and find a template to cut your arm holes, or just "wing-it"

I have about a 9 1/2 inch bib across the top as shown above and below

Fold in your curves along the arm holes about 1/2 inch and press. Fold them in again about 1/2 inch and press again. Do this again with the other side.

Determine how long you want your neck strap to be and cut it maybe about 1 inch longer. Pin the neck strap in place inside the folded armhole curves along the top of bib leaving about 1/2 inch of the strap tucked inside the folds.

Got it?

{opps! I forgot to take a picture of that step. But you get the idea}

Pin the waistband strap inside the folded curves at the waistband also tucking in about 1/2 inch of the strap. Starting at the top, stitch down following the curve of the towel at one edge. Back tack a bit to give your straps some security and strength.

Stitch again. * ohh I'd say with about 1/2 inch in between the two seams* Making sure that you catch the folded edges of the armholes. It should now all be nicely sealed and you will have a neat row of double stitches finishing off one side.

Do the same for the other side. Make sure that your neck strap is not twisted. Cause you won't like it if is and you'll rip it out and start over. I did!!

Holy Smoke Batman

That is what she said!

I am a little late in posting this awesome quilt I made. Is that a bit of arrogant of myself to say that my own quilt is "awesome"? Well, I don't care. It is awesome!

See, I know this wonderfully terrific, talented, sweet, creative, caring person who does not want to make quilts anymore. Ophelia is her name. You can find her here.

Reconnecting with friends was on her mind. And, well that is just what we did. In January. At Starbucks. We caught each other up on our lives. We used to work together in a local quilt shop that has gone out of business.

Ophelia found out that the dearest thing to my heart is making quilts for babies who are born while there daddies are deployed. She decided to give me most of her fabric stash. You see, journaling is what is important to her. Documenting life's good and bad, sharing and caring and being creative in other ways besides in fabric.

This is the quilt that I made for her out of a wonderful bundle of shabby Robyn Pandolph fabrics that I found in the loads of fabric. I should have taken a picture of the back of my car. You wouldn't believe the motherload!!

When I gave Ophelia her quilt, she said "Holy Smoke Batman, Girl you are the greatest". It is hilarious getting together with her. Anytime there is something that she loves or is inspired by "Holy Smoke Batman" is her saying!! It is adorable!

Every other weekend, you find me at workshops that she leads at Jerry's Art-a-Rama. I am inspired and have started an art journal. I won't show it to you because it is sooo lousy. I know this for sure, I am not giving up quilting for journaling.

Strawberry Season

Last week was the beginning of The Produce box deliveries in my community. The season has officially started. Every Thursday, rain or shine (this time rain) I deliver local farm fresh produce right to member's houses. It's good hard work. It's wonderful to eat farm fresh produce and I know that $$$ is going right to our farmers here in NC.

Every morning I make myself a smoothie out of whatever fresh fruit that is available. I guess it will be strawberry until the peaches come round. I am in love with my Blendtec blender. It's definitely worth the money.

Morning Smoothie a la Driving Miss Stacey

1 cup of fruit

1 scoop of vanilla protein powder

1 squirt of organic blue agave nectar

1/2 cup almond or soy milk

1 cup of ice

Push "smoothie" and viola you get this

You know, the new high-end fabric that you can now get Jo-Anns. Let's be truthful here, I am not a Jo-Anns frequent customer. I'd rather shop my stash or local quilt shops. Or better yet, use the stuff that I get in Houston every year.

But come on now, a NEW Denyse Schmidt collection only available at Jo-Ann Fabrics. Let's be honest. I couldn't resist.

It feels nice. It really does.

After snagging a yard of each of the only remaining 11 bolts that they had. I am a happy camper. Okay, I need to be honest again, I'd love me some "Happy Camper" fabric from Heather Ross too. Why didn't I buy it when I worked at a quilt shop? I am kicking myself now.

{Change of Subject}

Letting me have a nice stay at home rainy-kinda-day wasn't on Mother Nature's mind today. When I stepped out of the fabric store, it was very eerie outside. The wind was a blowin' and a storm was coming.

I had to get home quick. The closer I got to home, the more nervous I got. Stuff was falling from the sky. Like building stuff, roof stuff, tree stuff, lots of stuff!!!!
Mother Nature thought it would be better to have 11 tornadoes here in my neck of the woods.

I called my kids and said don't go anywhere. We're due to have a tornado at 3:26 p.m. I cleared out our hall closet for our "safe" interior place to stay if it hit here. I watched the news as it got closer and closer. Our power was flickering on and off. Hail came like the size of large peas, wind like you can't imagine, the rain was horizontal and then it stopped. Then the sun came out.

There is some pretty bad damage all around and a few people have lost their lives. Events like this really put things in perspective for me, like my commitment to make the lives of some very special people (our military families) just a tad bit easier is even more solidified. I will keep doing what I am for all of ya'll.

Making this pieced parallelogram border was a lot of work. I do love how they turned out. Now I want to make another quilt with this type of border.

New Homes for Orphan Blocks

We've all got them. Left over blocks that we just didn't like, samples that didn't turn out exactly the way we wanted them to. Extras from patterns that made one odd ball block that didn't fit into the rows.

Over the next week or two, I'll be introducing you to many of my Bloggy Friends as the month progresses.

Monday Morning Counter Attack... Submitted by Gladys

Clean it off and put things away on Sunday evening before you leave your sewing space.

For the working woman, Monday mornings are a struggle getting children and husband out the door, while "trying" to have your turn in the bathroom...

When that working woman comes home on Monday evening, she isn't going near that sewing space because she doesn't want to face the mess...but if it is all cleaned up you will go in a grab, (sew) at least a few minutes for your relaxation.

For the non working woman, wouldn't it be nice to walk into a clean space with that first cup of coffee ??

I put it in the same catagory as my kitchen ...I don't want my counter full of dirty dishes, and my stove messy, I have to be able to get to my Coffee Pot !!!

Have you ever been to QUILTVILLE? If you haven't, you should. IF you have, aren't you glad?

All of us quilters in QUILTVILLE sorted our fabrics, chose our colors, arranged and rearranged our stash looking for the perfect bits and pieces of just that right color combo. We anxiously waited checking the computer oh about 10 times a day, just to see if Bonnie K. Hunter of Quiltville.com posted the FIRST CLUE for the new Mystery Quilt – ROLL ROLL COTTON BOLL

THE DAY FINALLY CAME – November 19, in the wee hours of the morning – CLUE 1 was posted and the fun began.

Now on December 19th, A month later here is some of my progress

So I like to use pizza boxes to store my blocks in. Clean ones, of course. You should see me driving around town going into pizza joints asking for empty boxes. I am kinda embarrassed asking for ...um... maybe ten of them....please. So I ask for 3 to 4 and then hit up another store asking for more.

I am putting each clue into its own box. You never know how many clues Bonnie is going to give us before the whole quilt is done. Then it's on to putting the whole thing together. Now Bonnie doesn't mess around and make small quilts. No. Her quilts are HUGE. This one will finish 87" X 102".

Here is a quote from her:

"I love quilts. BIG quilts. I don't have a lot of use in my life for table runners or tiny quilts resembling place mats, I need something that is going to help me dig in and clear out, giving me a quilt big enough to cover the people I love! I also love quilts with lots of little pieces--but don't worry, we are all about straight easy sewing. There may be lots of units, but a cup of tea, some music on the stereo, a book on MP3, a few episodes of Oprah, and you will finish each step in good time."

I might not be watching Oprah, but I am happy as can be singing away to my favorite country songs. Country rules upstairs in my sewing room. It drives the rest of the family nuts. You just can't beat a fiddle and a guy like Trace Adkins or Kenny Chesney. Right y'all?

The wonders of a silicone baking mat. Nothing sticks.

Now I am impatient, I can't wait for my toffee to cool inside the house. Therefore, I bring it outside and place it in my screened porch for about 10 minutes. It gets rock hard. Most years this is fine because the temperature outside hovers around 34 to 40 at this time. Unless we have a year unlike others where it is 70 degrees.

Sprinkle your toffee with crushed peppermint candy canes, crushed pretzels, dark, semi-sweet and white chocolate chips, mini marsh mellows. Get creative. Let me know what you would put on top of your toffee.

Thanksgiving Place Card Tutorial

I made these with my daughter a few years ago. Back then, all she wanted to do was use my sewing machine. I mean like all the time. I also had to get her away from my fabric stash.

We decided on a this fun project. I supervised when it came to the rotary cutter. Other then that, I just let her go. We use these cards every year on our table. I hope you use them too. It's a great mom & me project. Super terrific for grandmas to do with grandkids too. Feel free to use this copyright free clipart.

Gather up some stuff:

card stock
ribbon ~ rick rack ~ buttons
sewing machine & thread
scissors or rotary cutter

You can use this Clip Art

1. Choose your design. Copy and paste it into a word document. Resize the image to your liking. Duplicate as many as will fit on one page. I just used regular white card stock.

2. Cut them apart. Gather up some pieces of decorative scrapbook paper or contrasting pieces of card stock.

3. Place your printed out image on top of your decorative paper. Stitch them together. Get creative with some of the fancy stitches on your sewing machine. We used the serpentine and regular straight stitch for ours.

4. Trim as desired by using a scissors, fancy ripple edge rotary cutter, or even tearing the paper for a really neat look.

5. Punch a hole in the top and add ribbon. You can write in names of your guests if desired. I leave them blank because every year our guest list changes.

When our table is all set for the big day, we put our cards on top the salad plates for a nice vintage look. And now, of course, my guests know that quilting and sewing is my passion.

I am giving this set of 12 away on November 15.

A tiny bit of history.

The observance of National Sewing Month began in 1982 with a proclamation from President Ronald Reagan declaring September as National Sewing Month “In recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation.”

Okay, well I was a bit young to appreciate this guy back then. A single girl living in Southern California. I was nowhere near a sewing machine. But thanks guy! Of course, now sewing is a different story. It's really up there with one of the most important things in my world these days. A day without my machine, is like a day without sunshine.

Yuck Caterpillers

Oh some time around 1:30 this afternoon

Don't look if caterpillars gross you out.

What are all these little pellets on the sidewalk between my house and my neighbor? I wondered. They are gross. When it rains, yuck, it's even more gross!! It is making my sidewalk a prime target for some serious power washing this fall.

Oooo! I looked up and saw branches of an oak tree covered and being munched by these.

I hate the mess, but I was treated to hundreds of butterflies around in my front planter.

For some reason they didn't like these hot peppers!

So should I make a Very Hungry Caterpiller quilt? Naw!

ADDENDUM TO BLOG POST 9:30 PM

Took my darling youngest daughter out to dinner tonight. To Yummy Noodles Cafe!!
She filled me in on all of her newest sorority happenings, classes and events out and about in town near her college. She mentioned that she is going to be doing a Press Preview for some new exhibits that will be happening this year at the North Carolina Museum of Art. She interned there this summer and loved it.

"Mom" she said "Did you ever hear of an artist called Eric Carle? The museum is going to be doing an exhibit on him."

Pumpkin-Swirl Brownies

Oh my kitchen smells delightful this morning. I got up super early this morning, checked my email and was treated to this delicious oooey gooey cookie recipe.

Chocolate and pumpkin make a frightfully gooey pair in these creamy pumpkin-swirl brownies.

(recipe from MarthaStewart.com: Cookie of the Day)

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, plus more for pan
6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups sugar
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups solid-pack pumpkin
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup chopped hazelnuts or other nuts

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-inch square baking pan or dish. Line bottom of pan with parchment paper; butter lining.

Melt chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth.

Whisk together flour, baking powder, cayenne, and salt in a large bowl; set aside. Put sugar, eggs, and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment; beat until fluffy and well combined, 3 to 5 minutes. Beat in flour mixture.

Divide batter between two medium bowls (about 2 cups per bowl). Stir chocolate mixture into one bowl. In other bowl, stir in pumpkin, oil, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Transfer half of chocolate batter to prepared pan smoothing top with a rubber spatula. Top with half of pumpkin batter. Repeat to make one more chocolate layer and one more pumpkin layer. Work quickly so batters don't set.

With a small spatula or a table knife, gently swirl the two batters to create a marbled effect. Sprinkle with nuts.

Bake until set, 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool in pan on a wire rack. Cut into 16 squares.

It's cooling on the counter right now. I've never had a cookie with cayenne pepper in it. How about you?

I just might eat all 16 squares :)

Running to Joann's this morning for a piece of white batting for a donation quilt I am making, I scored these great pattern and file organizers.

Clearance Sign! I had to look. Wow! I love 'em!

For .97 cents for a pack of three file folders and the boxes @ .97 cents each too. I bought all of them.

I remember when I first saw this matching stuff last month. You know, when parents go way overboard in the back to college buying spree/rush that was a few weeks ago. I was too cheap to buy them then. My daughter didn't need them. I did. Why does Joann's have back to school and dorm stuff anyway?

"Vintage Village" that is :)

What an adorable place I found. Literally right next to some railroad tracks. A sweet set of antique barns, out buildings and porches turned into a shabby, cottage, vintage antiquing haven. Using some crummy land by some crummy railroad tracks, a super smart group of antique sellers got together and made this a whole neat shopping experience.

A dingy ironing board cover puts me in a grumpy mood.

ick, yucky, ewww

*definition of "yucky" according to the Urban Dictionary*
Expression of disgust; fusion of yuck and ick. Similar to eww.

I didn't realize how grungy it was. I won't even show you.

Months ago I saw on-line tutorial using your old cover as a pattern for a new one. Using the existing cover and the pull strings as your base.

I cut out the yucky cover and just left about 1/2 inch around the finished edges of the string and bias tape holding it all together.

I am lucky enough to live near a home dec store called Designer Fabrics for Less. Everything is $7.99 a yard. Really :)

I had a nice 1 1/2 yard piece left over fabric from when I re-styled my porch this summer. Since it is 60 inches wide, I sliced it in half and have even another piece leftover when this one gets yucky too!

I made it this afternoon and it took me less then half-hour to make. At $5.99.

It's hard to find the covers to fit this super wide one. I used to get them at Linens and Things. Well, that store went bye, bye. So I took matters into my own hands and I love the results.

What do ya'll use to fill yours up with? I've seen some real creative cuties out there. They are filled with walnut shells. Huh? Is that cool or do you think maybe bugs might come on over for a visit?

Speed Shopping in a Quilt Shop

I couldn't resist.
I got caught up in the excitement of shopping in New York City.

My limit was $100 bucks! I spent way less.
That's amazing for me.

I had 20 minutes to look around the shop before heading to the airport to return back home to NC. The rest of my family waited patiently looking at the rest of the shops in the Chelsea District.

They know the routine: In a different city? find quilt shop; let mom look; she has to speed shop; make her stop talking to the employees; let's get her out of there.

My Bernina sewing machine has broken down. The hand wheel just flew right off. Nuts and bolts stripped down and broken. It still works, but it's not the same. I can't turn the wheel to adjust my needle or pick up the bobbin thread. I can't pivot and turn while quilting. There is a huge hole on the right side.

When the weather gets cooler here (maybe in October), I'll get over to my local shop and get it fixed. No, just kidding, I'll bring it there next week. But it is just too darn hot outside. Just a trip to the post office carrying a bunch of boxes and packages can get you all sticky. It's not fun. It is really ever any fun going to the post office?

So like my favorite country guy, Direks Bentley, I'll Settle for a Slowdown. I'm liking my little slow down. Whew. This machine is sloooooow. I can't put the foot pedal to the metal as my friends say about my sewing style.

Yeah, I'd say we do things slower here in the South in the summer.

When I use my featherweight, I have a tendency to work on old-fashioned looking projects. Really I do. Saw-tooth star blocks in double pinks that I have been working on for a few years now, log cabin blocks, and lots of scrappy quilts from Quiltville.com

I joined My Produce Box

How exciting... each week I get a locally grown, farm-fresh produce box delivered right my door... every week during our North Carolina growing season.

I save time and money while they bring the farmers’ market to me! A fantastic newsletter is included too. And the recipes, WOW, they are delicious.

They also say "Don't freak out with a critter in the corn" Just cut it off and wash well. If more than an inch is eaten, they will replace it. Ohhh, I will freak out if I see a worm on my corn. I think I'll scream and then throw it and then pace around the kitchen and not want to look at the darned thing.

A box FULL of fruits and vegetables (sometimes overflowing) picked the same morning or afternoon before it's delivered.

Here is what I made.

1. I roasted my corn on the BBQ, cut the kernels off and tossed them with tomatoes and cucumbers. Chilled them in the refrigerator and added a nice splash of cesaer salad dressing.

2. I made salsa with my tomatoes and green peppers. With a little bit of help from my "hot peppers" from my garden. I made fish tacos for dinner one night. My husband added the salsa to his scrambled eggs and cheese the next morning for a
spicy breakfast.

3. Fruit salad with my watermelon and sprite melon.

3. Grilled my peaches and had them as a side dish with our pizza. I also had just one tomato left so it went on the pizza with slices of mozzarella and basil that I grew in my garden.

I am loving this box! I am so happy that I joined. I also love the newsletter that come along with the boxes.

I've been MIA

I have been MIA for about 2 1/2 weeks. I may have been missing, but I was totally in action. My daughter got married last weekend. There was a whirl-wind of activity around here.

Now it's time for me to get back to my sewing machine, making kits for the store and catching up with my emails.

Remember the Book The Rainbow Fish?

An inspiring story about the most beautiful fish with shimmering, gorgeous scales. In the beginning of the book, Rainbow Fish was self-centered and had an arrogant personality; whenever any fish asked for one of his many scales, he would always decline and never would share. Throughout the story, Rainbow Fish slowly realizes that being beautiful is not the key to happiness. The lesson learned is that sharing and being a good friend is how you become happy.

I forgot my friend's birthday

I totally forgot my friend's birthday last week. Granted she was away at an incredible island get-away out of the country and probably didn't miss me. But I goofed.

Most Friday's when our schedules work, we have a sewing date. Yesterday she gave me a nice set of wonderfully scented hand-soap for my birthday. It was sitting so pretty on her sewing table right when I got there. She didn't forget about my birthday.

It starts with a set of kitchen towels.

A set of three towels makes a perfect pillow for the back cushion on my bench.

About every two to three years, I need to redo the pillows in my porch. They get faded, loaded with too much pollen, and I just need a freshen up kinda face lift in there.

For $6.99, at Tuesday Morning no less, I got a set of three huge kitchen towels. My main fabric is in front, the solid yellow is the back. I cut up the stripe towel on the bias into 2 inch strips and used it for my cording. Attached a zipper in the back.

Viola! Instant Sunshine!

No quilting this weekend, just pillow fun.

'Tis the Season

For Potato Salad!

Tomorrow, Memorial Day, is the official start of the outdoor season. Picnics, patios, decks, beach houses, campgrounds, country concerts, tailgating~it's all fun. It's a wonderful time for family and friends to gather together and enjoy each other's company.

I make mine with tons of fingerling potatoes, fresh rosemary, garlic, olive oil, kosher salt and amazingly potent pepper blend from Williams-Sonoma. Room temperature the first day and then cold if there are any leftovers:)

Let's us not forget the reason for our remembrance of Memorial Day. I did a little research and wanted to share this wonderful website with ya'll. It's full of facts, speeches, poems & prayers, online activities, e-cards and so many other things to numerous to list. Please check it out.

U.S. Memorial Day History

Every year, my husband (a former Marine) and I go to the Raleigh National Cemetery. We don't know anyone buried there. We just go. We walk quietly holding hands. Looking at all the grave sites of those who have served our country. Many are from the civil war era. We think and reflect on our lives and know that we are so fortunate to live where we live and LIVE. I never leave without tons of tears.

Take a few minutes just to reflect on how fortunate we all are to be where we are today.

Rumble of the UPS Truck

Finished the binding on this last night and already have it in my porch.

My daughter and I have a thing about taking a picture of our toes whenever we are on vacation, on a hammock, chillin' at our friend's lakehouse. Anywhere fun.

The Bees are buzzing today. Can't wait to see the show & tell at my quilting bee meeting today. We've got some super talented quilters.

I have nothing for show & tell except my small lemonade table runner. I have been working on new pillows for my porch. Red & White & Blue. I snagged these new chairs at Tuesday Morning. Yes!!!

This is not my porch ~ If I lived in a super old house, wouldn't this be the place? Just sitting back and watching my neighbors go about their day, waving and stopping to say "hey" and catch up with each other. Well, ya'll I think that's how it used to be.

When I first moved to the South, our family would take a nice summer evening drive just a bit out of town and look at some of these really old houses. You only have to go about three miles and you are out of the city and into rural life. Such a change from Los Angeles. You see, coming from LA, Wow, old houses like the wooden ones would only be in magazines.

oh yeah, this is for my husband. Guess what? I saw fireflies last night.

Okay Ya'll It's Sweet Tea Time

Once on a trip to the DC area in a restaurant, I ordered an iced tea. I said "sweet" please. The waiter kindly told me "You are not in the South here honey, we don't have sweet tea." Well I was definitely put in my place. I think I suffered with some Splenda.

I love the South. Back home here they would of said "Yes Ma'am, I'll git yer drinks and be right back. (Please insert your own southern accent).

Which brings me to the subject of this post. My absolutely ultimately favorite place in the world is sitting comfy in my big ol' screened in porch sipping a sweet tea or lemonade. Listening to the birds, frogs, watching fireflies, or the ultimate summer thunder storm roll through.

We don't have a regular table and chairs in there, but an awesome white iron daybed and with lots adirondack chairs and a bench. Full of fluffed up pillows and quilts.

I remember all of us squeezed on top of that bed just watching those storms pass through. I think those were the best times with my kids, watching all that lightening. They'd ohh and ahh and take comfort with their momma. Now they're growing up, and sometimes scattered in all directions. Now I enjoy it with my husband. Thunderstorm season is just about here!

My friend Fiona calls my screened-in-porch "My Campground". I so want to make it a little bit more cutesy. Maybe paint my adirondack chairs white. Every year I dream up new decorating ideas, but I just can't take the bed out of there.

{pssst. Don't tell my neighbors, but I'm gonna sleep out there this year before it gets to hot}

There is not a day that I don't go out there. I have my morning cup of coffee, switch out the quilts on the bed, or sometimes just chill and read some quilting magazines or my favorite shabby cottage book. There's nothing finer in Carolina.
